Hypnotism is an old concept that has spurred much in the way of mystery and intrigue for many, many years. When people hear the word “hypnotism” and then are asked to think about what it means to them, they will most likely think of men in cloaks swinging pocket watches in front of the eyes of a willing subject. It makes people think of mind control and having the hypnotized person do the bidding of someone else. It can be anything from clucking like a chicken to doing the Macarena on stage in front of an audience. This is not true and is an image that has been supported for years and years by movies and television shows. Hypnotism is actually an approved form of therapy for many people. It is often utilized to rid people of stress, phobias, and bad habits, as well as used for pain relief.
While many know the art of hypnotism as a person is lulled to sleep, there is the ability to hypnotize people while they are conscious. Many want to know how to hypnotize people while awake. Known as conversational hypnotism or covert hypnotism, it is a type of hypnotism that provides the ability to communicate as well as influence the subconscious mind of an individual during what appears to be a regular conversation. To put simply – covert hypnotism is the art of influencing individuals through conversation.
Covert hypnotism was developed by Milton Erikson when it was actually prohibited for use by medical practitioners as stipulated by the American Medical Association. While the traditional form of hypnosis involved formally inducing someone into a trance-like state, covert hypnosis involved the invocation of this trance-like state while conducting normal conversation. The subject of the hypnosis is never even made aware. It is one of the fine arts of mental persuasion that utilized body language, facial expressions plus a number of carefully selected words that can resonate with the subconscious mind of an individual.
How To Do Covert Hypnotism
Many individuals wonder how to hypnotize people while awake and make them do commands. It is incredibly easy. Many of the most well known political leaders were well verse in the art of covert hypnotism. Individuals called these leaders charismatic and charming, but really their speeches were full of covert hypnotism techniques. This allowed them to speak to audiences and have them completely bypass the critical analysis portion of their brain. Other great examples of people who tend to use cover hypnotism include motivational speakers as well as the men and women who do those late night infomercials. People today use covert hypnotism to seduce lovers, change decisions, make new friends, and even sell products to strangers. It is like the best “unfair advantage” one person can have over others. There are three basic steps to how to hypnotize people while awake.
First, individuals need to build rapport with the person or people they have set their sights on. Rapport is creating that feeling of trust and connection between people. This connection does not necessarily have to be really deep as with family members and friends, there is already established rapport. To gain rapport laugh at people’s jokes, give them a compliment, or sympathize with them on a given topic.
Second, the critical mind of the listener (the recipient of the covert hypnotism) needs to be completely switched off. The critical mind is like their “rational thinking cap.” It is the factor that needs to be bypassed before getting into someone’s subconscious. It needs to be turned off as it is like the guard dog to the subconscious mind. It does not like intruders and tends to analyze all information and only permits what fits in that individual’s world view to pass through. One of the best says to do this is to use words and phrases like “What if” and “Imagine.” This makes the imagination portion of the brain, the subconscious, start to function, rather than critical mind portion.
Third, make hypnotic commands. After getting passed the critical mind, individuals can now make commands and get people to do their bidding. Get them to focus on your words by drawing in their full attention.
Always keep in mind that though covert hypnosis is extremely powerful, just like traditional hypnosis, there are limits. Individuals cannot covertly hypnotize a person to fulfill an action that does not fall into their moral code. It is completely impossible so do not even attempt to try it.
Covert Hypnosis Happens More Than People Think
Self-help gurus, teachers, business executives, even con artists know the art of covert hypnosis. Sometimes they may not be aware of it, but that is exactly what they are doing. Everyone knows at least one of these types of people; they have a bit of flair and swagger about themselves. They have the ability to walk up to just about anyone and connect instantaneously.
To be able to take part in covert hypnosis, individuals need to know how to effectively communicate with other people. It is how rapport is built, the main cornerstone of covert hypnosis. Without rapport, there is no emotional connection and no feelings of trust. Therefore, individuals have no possibility of influencing an individual.
Communication is the key ingredient to success. It does not make a difference if the individual is a car groomer, president of a large corporation, or a cashier at the local grocery store – the better able they are to communicate, the better chances they have at covert hypnotism. Individuals who are not naturally gifted with the skill of easy communication should not think that they cannot participate in covert hypnotism. There are ways to get around it, to learn it, and to feel comfortable while talking to others.
Try out covert hypnotism on a family member or friend first and see how it goes. Many people are surprised by what they can do if they put their mind to it!
