Hypnotism is an old concept that has spurred much in the way of mystery and intrigue for many, many years. When people hear the word “hypnotism” and then are asked to think about what it means to them, they will most likely think of men in cloaks swinging pocket watches in front of the eyes of a willing subject. It makes people think of mind control and having the hypnotized person do the bidding of someone else. It can be anything from clucking like a chicken to doing the Macarena on stage in front of an audience. This is not true and is an image that has been supported for years and years by movies and television shows. Hypnotism is actually an approved form of therapy for many people. It is often utilized to rid people of stress, phobias, and bad habits, as well as used for pain relief.

While many know the art of hypnotism as a person is lulled to sleep, there is the ability to hypnotize people while they are conscious. Many want to know how to hypnotize people while awake. Known as conversational hypnotism or covert hypnotism, it is a type of hypnotism that provides the ability to communicate as well as influence the subconscious mind of an individual during what appears to be a regular conversation. To put simply – covert hypnotism is the art of influencing individuals through conversation.

Covert hypnotism was developed by Milton Erikson when it was actually prohibited for use by medical practitioners as stipulated by the American Medical Association. While the traditional form of hypnosis involved formally inducing someone into a trance-like state, covert hypnosis involved the invocation of this trance-like state while conducting normal conversation. The subject of the hypnosis is never even made aware. It is one of the fine arts of mental persuasion that utilized body language, facial expressions plus a number of carefully selected words that can resonate with the subconscious mind of an individual.

How To Do Covert Hypnotism

Many individuals wonder how to hypnotize people while awake and make them do commands. It is incredibly easy. Many of the most well known political leaders were well verse in the art of covert hypnotism. Individuals called these leaders charismatic and charming, but really their speeches were full of covert hypnotism techniques. This allowed them to speak to audiences and have them completely bypass the critical analysis portion of their brain. Other great examples of people who tend to use cover hypnotism include motivational speakers as well as the men and women who do those late night infomercials. People today use covert hypnotism to seduce lovers, change decisions, make new friends, and even sell products to strangers. It is like the best “unfair advantage” one person can have over others. There are three basic steps to how to hypnotize people while awake.

First, individuals need to build rapport with the person or people they have set their sights on. Rapport is creating that feeling of trust and connection between people. This connection does not necessarily have to be really deep as with family members and friends, there is already established rapport. To gain rapport laugh at people’s jokes, give them a compliment, or sympathize with them on a given topic.

Second, the critical mind of the listener (the recipient of the covert hypnotism) needs to be completely switched off. The critical mind is like their “rational thinking cap.” It is the factor that needs to be bypassed before getting into someone’s subconscious. It needs to be turned off as it is like the guard dog to the subconscious mind. It does not like intruders and tends to analyze all information and only permits what fits in that individual’s world view to pass through. One of the best says to do this is to use words and phrases like “What if” and “Imagine.” This makes the imagination portion of the brain, the subconscious, start to function, rather than critical mind portion.

Third, make hypnotic commands. After getting passed the critical mind, individuals can now make commands and get people to do their bidding. Get them to focus on your words by drawing in their full attention.

Always keep in mind that though covert hypnosis is extremely powerful, just like traditional hypnosis, there are limits. Individuals cannot covertly hypnotize a person to fulfill an action that does not fall into their moral code. It is completely impossible so do not even attempt to try it.

Covert Hypnosis Happens More Than People Think

Self-help gurus, teachers, business executives, even con artists know the art of covert hypnosis. Sometimes they may not be aware of it, but that is exactly what they are doing. Everyone knows at least one of these types of people; they have a bit of flair and swagger about themselves. They have the ability to walk up to just about anyone and connect instantaneously.

To be able to take part in covert hypnosis, individuals need to know how to effectively communicate with other people. It is how rapport is built, the main cornerstone of covert hypnosis. Without rapport, there is no emotional connection and no feelings of trust. Therefore, individuals have no possibility of influencing an individual.

Communication is the key ingredient to success. It does not make a difference if the individual is a car groomer, president of a large corporation, or a cashier at the local grocery store – the better able they are to communicate, the better chances they have at covert hypnotism. Individuals who are not naturally gifted with the skill of easy communication should not think that they cannot participate in covert hypnotism. There are ways to get around it, to learn it, and to feel comfortable while talking to others.

Try out covert hypnotism on a family member or friend first and see how it goes. Many people are surprised by what they can do if they put their mind to it!

“You are getting sleepy, very sleepy…” This is what most people recognize and think of when they hear the word “hypnotism.” And while hypnosis is recognized as an effective and viable treatment method, there are a number of misconceptions and myths floating around that make people wonder is hypnotism real. Popular culture often tends to showcase hypnosis as something and is mystical and/or laughable. Everyone has gone to a carnival or fair where a fake hypnotist is “practicing mind control” whereby they get people to do or say silly things that they will not remember upon waking up. However, hypnotism has little to do with sleeping and while some men and women are much more susceptible than others, if an individual does not want to by hypnotized, it will not happen.

Brief History of Hypnotism

The utilization of hypnotism for medical reasons started in the eighteenth century. Franz Mesmer, an Austrian physician created a new technique to induce trances based on the idea of animal magnetism – the part of the body that is susceptible to the influence of other bodies. He came from the belief that animal magnetism plus an imbalance in the body were the main causes of disease and pain. By putting a patient into a trance-like state, balance was restored. Benjamin Franklin later investigated these claims when asked by King Louis XVI of France. Franklin discredited the treatments.

However, in 1843, James Braid, a Scottish surgeon, was the first to create the word “hypnotism.” He derived this word from the name of the Greek god of sleep – Hypnos. Braid focused on trying to relieve pain experienced during a surgical procedure (this was before the introduction of anesthesia). While he wanted to distance his studies from Mesmer’s, it did take on some connotations, just without the magic wands and silk robes Mesmer was known to use.

By the 1950s, hypnosis finally gained some footing as a valid treatment throughout the medical community. The use of scientific studies and measurements aimed to answer the question of is hypnotism real. William Ray, a psychology professor at Penn State University, said that since them there have been thousands of articles published in numerous psychological and medical journals that documented the utilization of hypnosis, or hypnotherapy, for treatment of emotional and mental disorders, pain relief, and as a viable option for behavioral therapy. By 1958, hypnosis was approved as a viable form of therapy by the American Medical Association and by the American Psychiatric Association in 1961.

Who is Able to be Hypnotized

The very first reliable scale to see how amenable a man or woman is to hypnosis was developed in Stanford University in 1959 and was known as the Hypnotic Susceptibility Scale. A number of studies have been done to show that around 95 percent of the entire population is amenable to hypnosis to some extent. Each individual will have their own varying degree of how responsive they are to hypnosis. While research has yet to show why some respond more than others, there is some thought that it is linked to a person’s ability to be fully engrossed in daily activities. For example, some individuals are so into a book they are reading that they do not hear someone call their name or they lose track of time.

How Does Hypnosis Work

When people think of hypnosis, they think of a guy waving a watch in front of their faces, counting to ten and snapping their fingers. Really, this only occurs in television and movies. Therapists who are trained in hypnotherapy look to put an individual into a state of very deep relaxation. Often this is done by maintaining focus on a sound, a phrase, or even a single word. Once the brain becomes relaxed, it is more susceptible to suggestion. These suggestions can be utilized to encourage behavioral changes and relief. Well known reasons to use hypnotherapy have been to quit smoking, get pain relief during child labor, overcoming eating disorders, or certain phobias, like the fear of flying, the fear of public speaking, or even agoraphobia.

Using Hypnotism as a Therapeutic Tool

When posed with the inquiry of is hypnotism real, many therapists today say that it is. If an individual is suggestible, hypnosis can be a very valuable tool when it comes to dealing with anxiety, stress, or pain management. The British Medical Journal published an article in 1999 stating that there is a lot of evidence available that demonstrates the level of effectiveness hypnosis has on cancer patients, in terms of pain, nausea, and anxiety.

The University of Washington’s School of Medicine concluded a study in 2003 showcasing the idea that hypnosis could be even used rather than analgesics for individuals suffering from chronic pain. A Harvard study in 2008 showed that post-surgical patients given hypnosis suffered from much less anxiety and pain than individuals who got standard care or empathetic care.

The Origins of Hypnosis – History of Hypnotism

Even though the origins of hypnotism are not very clear, it is one of the most popular techniques for self improvement and healing.

How Hypnotism Works

As many of us think hypnotism is not some thing like a black magic which can be performed only by a blessed few. The fact is that hypnotism has nothing magical in it.

What is Hypnosis – Key Concepts in Hypnosis

Hypnosis is actually a state of focused attention in which the hypnotized person is fully awake. The state of hypnotism just increases the suggestibility and decreases awareness of the surroundings.

After learning that hypnotism is an actual thing, individuals want to know, “How do you hypnotize someone?” Many people have seen the advertisements on the back of comic books stating they too could learn how to hypnotize. Others have watched on television and in movies how hypnotism is utilized to make someone do something. Unfortunately, it is these perceptions that have made the acceptance rate of hypnosis a lot slower within the general public. The truth is that not many individuals are made fully aware of all the scientific evidence available that backs up the use of hypnotism. Hypnosis has long been used as a viable too to assist individuals looking to get rid of pain, increase healing, break habits, or achieve certain goals.

Another thing that many do not know is that it is actually very simple to hypnotize people. In fact, if someone is daydreaming or completely engrossed in a book, for example, time wanders and it is state very similar to that of hypnosis. Hypnosis induces a natural state that feels a bit like relaxing and even falling asleep!

Things to Keep in Mind before Hypnotizing

There are some things individuals need to keep in mind before learning how to hypnotize someone. First and foremost, do not ask a person to do something that can be construed as harmful. While this may seem obvious, a good rule to stick to is never ask a person to do something under hypnotism that they would not be asked to do when fully conscious.

People will most likely say that they do not “feel” as though they are hypnotized. Because hypnosis is considered a naturally occurring state, if is quite normal for people to feel as though nothing happened. People tend to experience an odd feeling that just does not come about.

The only thing that will stop an individual from being hypnotized is fear. If someone has a fear of hypnotism or what they may be asked to do, they are not susceptible to its effects.

Common signs of hypnosis include:

• Eyelids fluttering
• Increased wetness and/or redness in the eyes
• General feeling of relaxation
• Relaxation of all facial muscles
• Tingling sensations
• Changes in a person’s rate and depth of breathing
• Slight twitching in legs, arms, and fingers

What to Explain to the Person before Putting them under Hypnosis

Prior to hypnotizing an individual, there are some things that should be first explained.

• Hypnosis is considered a naturally occurring state and therefore will feel quite natural.
• Individuals should feel relaxed and not “hypnotized.”
• Individuals cannot get stuck in a hypnotized-induced trance as soon on television and movies.
• Value system and morals continue to remain in place despite being hypnotized.
• Individuals can still maintain awareness of what is going on in the environment around them.
• A majority of individuals do in fact remember what they did while under hypnosis.

The Progressive Relaxation Induction

The progressive relaxation hypnosis technique is one of the most commonly used methods to hypnotize a willing participant. Here is how to hypnotize a person with this technique:

• Have the individual participating either sit or lie down in a position that is comfortable for them.

• Talk to them in a voice that is soothing and calm, but not necessary monotonous.

• Tell them to take a deep breath in, close their eyes, and feel their body as it begins to relax.

• Ask the individual to place their awareness on various parts of their body to relax them. Tell them to become aware of the body part and then relax it and get them to feel more comfortable. Repeat these instructions for the entire body. It is often beneficial to start with the feet and work up to the head.

• While saying this, do not forget to use positive affirmations, such as “That is right, you are doing a very good job.”

• Keep in mind for some people this relaxation process may need to be done two or three times.

• Once the hypnotist is ready for them to emerge, say something like, “I am not going to count to the number five. When I get to the number five, open your eyes and feel refreshed and relaxed.” As the hypnotist is counting to five, their voice should go from soothing to more much awake. Once the hypnotist gets to the number four, they should say “At the very next number, open your eyes and feel refreshed and relaxed.”

• Once their eyes are open, hypnotists can choose what they want the individual to do while they are in their trance. Always give instructions that are short and to the point. Do not give them long-winded things to think about, say or do, because it can be too overwhelming while in this state.

• When the person is ready to take them out of the trance, have the individual close their eyes and count the same way as before, but instead of counting from one to five, count down from five to one and clap hands at one. The individual will then come right out of their trance.

Frequently Asked Questions Regarding Hypnosis

Is hypnosis safe? Yes, hypnosis is very safe. The state of consciousness is not altered, but the experience of consciousness is.

Do people do things they do not want to do? Even while in a trance-like state, individuals still retain their personality and their personal beliefs. They are still themselves. While in a trance, individuals can refuse a suggestion offered by the hypnotist (which is why it is called a “suggestion” and not an “order).

How does one respond better to hypnosis? Individuals should be calm and relaxed throughout the whole process. If they are feeling uptight or are uncomfortable, they will not be as susceptible to hypnosis.

What does being hypnotized feel like? Think about how it is like to let imagination run wild or to day dream. Hypnosis feels like a daydream.

Many people imagine getting exactly what they want and when they want it, but they wonder if it is really truly possible to. Can hypnosis along with the law of attraction really provide individuals with these things? Today, everyone knows of hypnosis and what it is. While some only know of hypnosis as a stage performance, some individuals know of it as a valuable tool used by psychologists to remember details in the back of their mind, help them let go of an addiction, or assist them in getting over their phobias.

Law of Attraction – What is it and How it Relates to Hypnotism

The law of attraction is a process whereby individuals focus on a specific goal in an effort to achieve it. For example, numerous professional athletes utilize the law of attraction. They look to apply only positive energy around a specific goal. For most athletes, the goal is to win the game. To attract this desired outcome, if you really do want it and believe in it, it will come. It works along the lines of positive affirmations. If an individual only thinks about the negative things, they will have a lower self esteem and will not reach their potential success. Maintaining focus on the negative aspects means that individuals will continue to attract a negative vibe. This negative vibe will then be manifested into a person’s reality. They begin to change the way in which they see things. Therefore, the law of attraction will send positive vibes.

When combining the law of attraction with the art of hypnotism, this process of positive vibes goes one step further. While the process is similar, hypnosis is utilized to define the actual goal. The law of attraction hypnosis is not only utilized to reinforce certain goals that are set in an individual’s mind, but also get rid of any patterns in the mind that may hinder an individual from achieving their pictured goals as well. It not only gets individuals to their goals, but removes all the roadblocks to getting there.

Everyone is looking to be successful in their life, but not all men and women feel that they are quite ready for it. While this does sound a bit strange, there is an explanation. When utilizing hypnotism for instant attraction, a person is placed in a relaxed and calming state. This enables them to explore as well as discover the reasons why they are not successful, all the roadblocks in their way from reaching success. Some of these reasons could be experienced in their past, such as their childhood, a fear the person may have, or anything else that is related to the inability to be successful. When utilizing the law of attraction along with hypnosis, anything that can create doubt and plant seeds of negatively, are eliminated from the mind easily and effectively.

Benefits of Hypnotism for Instant Attraction

When individuals combine the law of attraction with hypnotism, they can gain a number of unique benefits.

First and foremost, they create much more joy in their life because they are creating their own, positive reality. They know they can change the way their current life works by changing their thoughts. Positive thoughts equal a positive life.

It can also reduce stress and anxiety. As anyone can attest to, when they feel happy and positive about life, there are less holes for stress and anxiety to come slinking through. When people have negative thoughts, they tend to be more open to the onset of stress. When a person feels good, they have fewer things to worry about and stress over.

Individuals are also able to continue moving toward their specific goal. As they can now visualize it, they can see themselves getting to that goal and being successful.

In Conclusion

When combined with hypnotism, the law of attraction can provide an individual with the tools required to achieve all their goals in order to be successful. Positive changes in a person’s overall quality of life can be created with the law of attraction.

Many cultures from ancient times practiced hypnosis as a way of altering the mindset and promoting subconscious healing within the body. Today though, most people see hypnosis as simply being an hilarious parlor trick.

The fact is that everyone experiences their own hypnotic state quite a few times every day. How often do we find ourselves staring blankly with a clear mind and then suddenly jolting back to ‘reality’ with a mind that is immediately crowded with all the usual 101 thoughts racing through it? What we were experiencing was actually a relaxed hypnotic state.

This hypnotic state is a naturally altered state wherein our mind is focused and relaxed. You could call it being on a natural high!

Hypnosis is a powerful and useful tool that we can tap into anytime we want to. Pain management, breaking habits, healing progression and anesthesia could all be safely and naturally enhanced by hypnosis. By using suggestion, hypnosis helps in creating a calm state of mind that could help a receiver overcome many obstacles. A person receiving hypnosis will need to relax so as to enter into their hypnotic state.

There are a number of tools or ways with which to hypnotize someone:

Hypnotic Sounds: A person can focus on a particular rhythmic sound such as a ticking clock or metronome. This can help in quieting their mind and helping them enter a calm and relaxed state. Meditative music can also be played that incorporates chimes and tones that will help a listener quiet their conscious mind while focusing on this music. Chanting could also help a person relax. Yoga meditations use mantras or chants for reaching a higher state of mind.

Hypnotic Visuals: When a person focuses on a rhythmic visual such as the swinging pendulum it will have the same effects as the repetitive sounds. A person can quiet their mind and enter a calm and relaxed state by narrowing their focus on a visual. Kaleidoscope images and fish tanks are arrhythmic visuals and are relaxing as well and help in inducing the hypnotic state. Even a simple thing like a digital clock that flashes could induce the hypnotic state.

Touch and Rhythmic Movements: Both gentle swinging and rocking can lull a person into a calm and relaxed state. The intent, as with any hypnotic tool, is in providing a particular focus to help the person tune out any distractions. Another way in which to quiet the mind and which provides a tactile or physical focal point is with gentle touch, for example rubbing the shoulders or the hands of the person.

Guided Meditation: Guided meditation activates a person’s imagination and will use spoken imagery for leading them into a calm and relaxed state. A person can guide themselves or meditate with the help of any therapist. A guide can provide minimal details while the patient can fill in any blanks. For instance, a guide could say to the patient, ‘You are strolling along the beach….’ and the patient can mentally fill in any details. Other instances could have the guide making a patient focus on their breathing and having each breath leading to another stage of relaxation.

Linking: Linking techniques work on the theory of association. A person’s consciousness will work by making connections and associations. They will follow a gradual procession of certain cause and effect suggestions that are made by their hypnotist. The theory works in that if someone accepts or believes something then they will be more inclined with accepting or believing something else which is connected or associated with it. For instance, a hypnotist could say, ‘When your shoulder relaxes, your neck and head will follow.’

Progressive Relaxation: The principle behind this hypnotic method is in giving a person a tangible activity for concentrating on. This will help the person focus more and keep them from getting distracted during their hypnotism process. Their hypnotist will command them to relax a certain part of their body one at a time. This method might start at the bottom and work its way up or start from the top downwards. For instance, a person will be commanded to loosen up or relax their feet or to relax their forehead.

Hypnosis is merely a means by which to directly contact a person’s subconscious mind. It is not religious or mystical although religions have been using it. Hypnosis is not an unnatural phenomenon and in fact anyone has been experiencing it all their life without even being aware of it. It is as natural as breathing.

People often think of hypnotism and hypnosis as forms of entertainment. In fact, there are a lot of hypnotists who are professional entertainers and make their living out of their vocation. However, hypnotism does also have therapeutic, research and medical values. When a person goes under anesthetic, there is always a very real possibility that their bleeding will not be able to be stopped. When a person is hypnotized before an operation in place of having an anesthetic, they will often hardly bleed.

The basic principles involved in being hypnotized are that a person will be guided by various suggestions so as to alter their perception, emotion, attention and sensations. It is a trance-like and focused, calm state of mind. A person will not be able to be hypnotized against their will. This dismisses the myth of a stage hypnotist having someone up on stage and people within the audience accidentally succumbing to the techniques and chants. Likewise, no one can be hypnotized just by looking into someone else’s eyes.

Many people believe that a person is sleeping when they are under hypnosis, but they are actually experiencing a heightened state of mind and awareness. Different methods of hypnosis are used to induce a hypnotic state. A person could even hypnotize themselves. Self-hypnosis can be achieved through meditation. Another myth is that people who are weak minded will be more susceptible to a hypnotist’s suggestions. In actual fact, a person who can focus easily with a keen imagination could be hypnotized. Anyone who listens to self hypnosis CD’s to stop smoking for example, will not be successful if they are skeptical and they do not really want to stop smoking.

Hypnotherapy can be used for helping people to break any bad habits and embracing healthier ones, improving their outlook on life, and exploring repressed feelings. Certain hypnosis techniques can also be used in assisting a person to control anger and stress, help a patient in managing their pain for instance in chemotherapy treatments or childbirth or even having a tooth extracted, as well as to guide a curiosity seeker who wants to participate in a past-life regression.

A hypnotist could use various affirmation techniques for creating a bond with their patient that will make them more susceptible for a hypnotic suggestion. The basic principle is in praising the patient and developing their self-belief, self confidence and identity. The hypnotist can praise and congratulate the person for successfully being able to follow individual commands. They could say ‘good’, ‘that’s right’ and so on to build the patient’s self confidence and thus encourage them to keep on.

With the aim of encouraging the benefits of healing at a subconscious level, the following will explain how to hypnotize a person.

1. A relaxing setting must be created for a hypnosis session. A quiet place with soft lighting and no distractions or interruptions will be best. Soft, meditative music can also be played.

2. The hypnotist must speak in a gentle manner and tell their subject to relax. A hypnotized person must feel totally comfortable and relax their mind and all their muscles.

3. The person must be asked to breathe deeply and close their eyes, again helping to relax them even further.

4. The hypnotist must see if their subject is entranced or completely relaxed. If so, they can start talking to their subject. This will be the questions and answers or the powers of suggestion, such as ‘suggesting’ relief of stress or pain from the mind of his or her subject.

5. A session should be closed by suggesting any wording that can break the subject’s trance-like state. For example, the hypnotist could say ‘When I mention ‘open your eyes’ then you can leave the level of awareness that you are on now and regain your fully conscious mind.’

6.A hypnotist should encourage his subject at the end of the session to have confidence in hypnosis and to know how powerful it can be. They should understand that by letting their minds relax and accepting the powers of suggestion, they will be capable of reaping the benefits that hypnosis offers.

Some people experience a real fear of their subconscious minds getting trapped during the hypnotic state without finding their way back out again. They do not have to worry, as they not only have the power and ability to wake up whenever they want to but they will be totally aware of what is going on around them as well, such as the phone ringing, the doorbell going or a car hooting outside.
